Confessions of an Eavesdropper

9 May

“Shhh…I’m trying to listen to what they’re saying!” I have a confession. I love to eavesdrop. I like to listen in on other peoples’ conversations. Is that kind of creepy? I know it’s wrong, but other people do it to, right? I mean, I’m not the only one?

Even if I have no idea who the people are, what they are talking about, I just like listening. Peeping in on these peoples’ lives, it’s like they left a window cracked and I’m looking into a world I’m not a part of. And it makes you feel kind of special though, too…like you’ve got your own little secret, “I know what you’re saying but you don’t know it!” Sort of like being a little spy, although for the most part you’re hardly gleaning any information that’s top-secret, or heck, even all that worthwhile. But just like those infomercials that play at 2am, you get sucked in and are powerless to change the station.

BUT, every now and again, every so often, you strike gold. You hear something that IS really juicy, maybe something you shouldn’t have heard and now you’re little secret information makes you feel really special, doesn’t it? So, eavesdropping is one of my weaknesses…and I have a feeling that it may just be one of yours too.

Such is the premise of my novel TABLE TALK – A NIGHT OF EAVESDROPPING, which takes you on an audio tour of one such restaurant on one such Friday night. The tables and the conversations are both different yet uniquely intertwine; where one conversation ends it leads to the next through a chance encounter of characters. Just how? Well, you’ll have to read it and find out, now won’t you?! Oh, did I mention it’s all dialogue? That was a tricky but fun little writing challenge for me.

TABLE TALK is like a collection of mini-stories but ties itself together nicely; the venue is the same after all, so all of the stories behind these characters are bound to run into each other. A few of them are in town for the very same track meet (there’s a fair sprinkling of running references here that fellow track nerds should appreciate), a few doing that whole awkward date thing, some families, some frenemies, and two are there for very dark reasons…their secret is far more of a sin than eavesdropping.

Anyways, I had a lot of fun in the writing of TABLE TALK and am currently in the process of trying to get it into publication. If there’s interest I’ll gladly post some excerpts from the book and keep you all posted on how my trek to publication is going, as well as share about the other projects I’ve got going on. Until then, keep on listening my fellow eavesdroppers…and here’s to hoping you strike that juicy nugget. 😉
